Measure the machine, opening, and turn
Record the washer or dryer at its widest, deepest, and tallest points. Measure the clear opening after accounting for the door, hinges, trim, and handrails.
Three useful measurements
| Measurement | What to include |

| Narrowest opening | Door slab, stops, trim, and any fixed hardware. |
| Tightest turn | Landing depth and room to pivot a dolly. |
| Stair envelope | Width, overhead clearance, rails, and final step. |
Disconnect before moving
Drain washers and secure hoses. Unplug electric dryers. A gas dryer must be disconnected by the appropriate qualified professional before the removal crew arrives.
