Keep the sealed system intact
Window and portable air conditioners contain refrigerant. Unplug the unit, drain it according to the manufacturer's instructions, and do not puncture, cut, or open the sealed system.
Before the handoff
| Check | Action |
|---|---|
| Window unit | Have it safely removed from the opening before pickup. |
| Portable unit | Drain water and secure hoses and cord. |
| Through-wall unit | Remove it from the sleeve before the crew arrives. |
| Refrigerant | Leave the circuit sealed for the disposal chain. |
Why the route is different
The EPA and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency require refrigerant to be controlled during disposal. A hauler should send these units through an appropriate processor rather than treat them as ordinary trash.
Plan the pickup
Call with the appliance type, condition, floor level, and tightest access point. Read the companion Air Conditioner Removal page for service boundaries, or visit the estimate guide.
